It started off when i stumbled upon Twoflowers fanfics. His Slayers Trilogy is among the BEST fanfics ive ever found and had the pleasure of reading. however, the more i looked, the more greatly saddened i became.
Dont get me wrong. There were many that were wonderful, one of which *Kristas 'Hearts of Ice' being the prime example* that only JUST completed. In her case, getting married, having children, and in-general life itself just got in the way, which is to be expected. Props to her for taking the time to go back and finish a well-done fic. 'Relentless', done by the same artist who did the webcomic 'Thunderstruck', was another absolute classic. Even some crossovers were good, such as Fires 'Destiny's Child', were at least resonable.
However, getting back to my prior statement, the more i looked, the more i realized just how late i came to the party, at least with these classic series. I felt as if i was some wanderer, exploring a broken landscape dotted with old ruins from long past, a few with priceless treasures in them, and the majority simply dangerous, monster-filled deathtraps waiting to consume the curious adventurer. I suppose its different when one is present while a series is at its 'peak', and the creative minds of the community, or those wishing to be so, are painting away with abandon. Its a vast difference when you come looking long after everyone has left he building.
Most, as anyone who has read such knows, are horridly flawed simulacrums of the real thing, disguised under good intentions until actually read, revealing their horrid true form as they spring to the attack. Either the author didnt think their ideas through, or in even more cases, only got about half-to-three-fourths through and lost interest, vanishing from sight for greener pastures. Even more painful is that some of these left-unfinished series were at times actually GOOD, and well thought out, even had thriving communities. Much like the lost Roanoke, these suddenly vanished much like their authors.
I agree some fanfics are just plain bad, sometimes even to the point of being worthy of execution. My point is, regardless, that going back and exploring a long-past series, and its once thriving community, good OR bad, is much akin to the feeling one would probably recieve when walking through the remains of a town long-since abandoned after being bombed, with the buildings, craters, remains, and such right where they were left when their inhabitants departed.
It is an eerie feeling indeed.....
